If the book is in the public domain, the pictures in them ought to be, too.

UK Sluggites: if a British person writes that they went to the store and bought a "pot of cream," how much are we talking? What is the volume of a pot?

I'll pop into the supermarket later and check what size pots cream comes in, but I'd guess 250ml or so.

I'm almost certain my computer has some kind of virus, but neither AVG or Malwarebytes is picking anything up. Anyone know of a program I can use that might be able to find whatever those two programs are missing?

Well, first and foremost make sure your virus databases are updated. If still nothing, you could try Avast... though I doubt it'd catch something that those two missed.

You could always try Vipre, it's one of the best and it uses very few system resources.

Or you could try describing the symptoms you're experiencing and the configuration of your system. Then someone might be able to suggest a possible cause and solution. Not everything is virus-related, and if AVG and Malwarebytes both fail to detect anything...maybe there's nothing to detect.

However, if you're convinced it must be a virus, I'd recommend ClamAV for Windows.

People will blame every computer problem on "viruses". Most of them are not.

Whenever I'm browsing the internet, occasionally a tab opens up all by itself that is asking me to buy something, or tells me that I've won something, and exiting out of the tab is a pain because my system starts lagging and clicking on the exit button results in being asked if I'm sure I want to pass on all the wonderful opportunities.

I'm running an XP. Is there anything else you guys want to know?

Are you using IE as your browser, and have you installed any toolbar extensions?

I'm using Mozilla Firefox, and I haven't installed any new items to my toolbar in months

Well, IE toolbar-based adware are rather infamous, so I figured that was a first shot. Looking around at Firefox-related stuff, it sounds like this seems similar to what you've described. On the other hand, I'm mainly a *nix kind of guy, so you might want to wait for a second opinion from FreakyBoy...he's more of a Windows techie in his day job, I believe.

Of course, the downside is that if MalwareBytes didn't detect any adware but you still get the pop-up tabs...then you seem to have been rootkitted pretty hard.

OldCrow's pretty much got it. If an updated MalwareBytes isn't removing it, you're looking at OS reinstall time.

The link that OldCrow posted has several replies that mention TDSSKiller would get rid of it. Any of you heard of it before?
