This thread was inspired by Funky Honky's post in Suggestions and Comments.Funky Honky wrote: In my limited time here I've noticed that pretty much any time that someone has a question about pretty much ANYTHING that there is a sluggite ready to help them with an answer. From physics to car maintenance to biology to constitutional law to movie trivia, there always seems to be SOMEONE who knows the answer. This leads me to think that having a general Q/A sticky might be a good idea. So... Good idea... implemented... Don't say I never got you anything. If a discussion (say... 2-3 response posts) springs out of any one particular question, please take it upon yourself to spread it to its own thread.

I actually started a thread like this once, a long time ago. Glad to see the idea revived. And by "a long time ago", I apparently mean 4 years. Found my thread.

Bloated and rather grey... and complete with the signs of having been picked at by various small water-life. Depending on the particular swamp, expect pondweed and mud/clay stains on the body.

Why is white chicken meat seen as more valuable than dark meat? It doesn't taste better in my opinion, it's drier and stringier.

It's leaner.
Dark meat has more fat in it.
That's why it tastes better.

I know dark meat has more fat in it. My question is why people prefer the white meat. This preference seemed to exist before people got really health-conscious. When my dad was a college student in Scotland in the late 1960s, his house-mates used to call dibs on the chicken breast and let him (the sole Asian guy) have the legs. Which suited him fine, because he never understood what was so great about the breast anyway. I don't think Scottish students in the 1960s were especially known for their healthy diets, given that half their caloric content probably arrived in the form of beer.

Its just a matter of personal taste. Some people prefer the taste/texture of white meat over dark. I like white meat myself, and can't really say anything about why. I just do. Just like I'm not particularly fond of pork. No specific reason, just personal taste.

As a white meat preferer, I like it for a few reasons: It's less greasy It's less gamey It's less chewy I don't have to meneuver through various tendons and blood vessels to get to the meat There is simply more meat to eat on a breast
BTW, there is no reason for white meat to be dry and unedible. When cooked correctly, a chicken breast can be just as juicy as a leg or thigh.

cool, leave all the dark meat for me... love legs and thighs... the only white meat that I really like is the wings.
I also do not like most pork.
I should ask a question... has anyone here ever used Dragon Naturally Speaking? does it work well?

I helped set up a doctor that works with our executive director with it last year. It surprisingly managed to figure out most of the technical terms she dictated.

I tried that program, or an earlier incarnation of it, ages ago and it didn't work worth a #$$%@. Of course, it is possible that the quality of the equipment (computer, microphone) was the real culprit.

I used the first version of it back in middle school at my friend's house to dictate a book I was writing. It took it an hour or two to get used to my mode of speech, but then it was almost spot-on for literally chapters at a time.

My father got it to help with dictation... though the one time I saw him using it, he was trying to teach it to understand curse words. The F-word kept coming up as France.
