What exactly is a meta-discussion? Is it like an argument but without the napalm?

I believe a meta-discussion would be a discussion about a discussion, the same way that metadata are data that describe other data. And yes, this can recurse infinitely.

Well... given that I know what "metagaming" is... that sorta makes sense. I mean... technically, metagaming isn't gaming within gaming... but rather the process of giving a character access to information that they couldn't logically have without breaching the 4th wall... i.e. things the player knows. There is a connection there. 4th-wall breach.

Meta as a prefix normally designates "above/outside the system". Thus, Metaphysics is the study of things outside the physical sciences. So, yeah. Meta-gaming would be the act of going outside the established bounds of the game's world to influence behaviour within the world. It can also just refer to self-reference though, in the sense of the phrase "going meta" - when people start realising that a given work is now commenting on itself within the work.

The other meaning commonly used is "about the system".
As in metadata, or metamathematics.
