In a speech at the Hoover Instition Attornery General Gonzalez said that one of his top targets would be... obcenity.
http://www.kait8.com/Global/story.asp?S=3009566
So, what's wrong with this [Obsenity deleted by the Justice Department]ing country is not [Obsenity deleted by the Justice Department]ing organised crime, or [Obsenity deleted by the Justice Department]ing drugs, or [Obsenity deleted by the Justice Department]ing terrorists, it's dirty language and rude things.
Do we blame Canada?

Naah; having just gotten done saying that he was personally going to be complicit in the far right wing conspiracy of illegal arrest and restraint in the Pedilla case (which, btw, is pronounced ped-ill-a, not ped-ee-a; a fact that took two years to discover), what else is he going to do? Go after corporate crime? Crack down on rich scofflaws who evade taxes? Crack down on major financial institutions that launder drug money?
Hell, the criminal scum won't even go after pornography unless it's produced by a small timer; Fox, Time-Warner, Sony, and etc can wallpaper major cities will full frontal nudity (of women, of course) if they so desire.

It's just a standard device in politics - if there are big, important issues that the politician is unwilling or unable to deal with, they yell "Look! Elvis!"
A great 'Elvis' is 'Values'. Societal values, family Values, traditional Values. It's easy for a politician to look like they really care, and really want to change things for the better if they say 'this problem with tax evasion/corporate crime/corruption is just a symptom of a breakdown in Our Societies Values! We need to make speeches about Kids These Days being exposed to porn!'
And the icecream-licking public think that the politician is a Good Man because they care about raising kids right. And with their Righteous Indignation safely focussed on sensationalist nuddie-pics or Janet Jackson's Evil Nipple Ring, the politicain can continue to avoid doing anything about Real Issues.

Its so nice to know that we're spending more time legislating morality rather actually doing something important. Yes, the AG of the United States knows more about keeping me safe from sinful and immoral things than I know myself. And he is caring enough to take the time to make the streets safe for good upstanding citizens such as me, who hears numerous obscienties every school day. Because I'm too stupid to be able to make the Good, Moral Choice.
Dear lord, whatever happened to Freedom and Liberty. I thought that they were quite nice...

This is so wrong it's destined to fail. The system isn't flawed because somebody's trying this - it'll only be flawed if he succeeds.

Technically speaking, we're not. This is just one guy, albeit a very important one, out of the whole of the federal government, which spends huge numbers of man-hours on many more (and also less) important things - even if you don't count the faceless bearucrats.
Oh, and it's spelled "obscenity."

Angrysunbird, I think they're talking about porn rather than swearing. Still stupid though.

Compared to the real problems of this country, urban violence, domestic violence, child abuse, terrorism, drugs etc etc etc, why waste your time fighting a battle that freedom of speach already won a few years back? Even if he wins it's still a waste of time.

They would have been nullified by the introduction of the PATRIOT act...

In this case, for personal and political gain; which hardly makes it stupid at all. Why people would still vote for Republicans like this...that I could not tell you.
