I suspect it's more a case of doomed today versus doomed tomorrow; they're telling themselves there's always that chance the horse will learn to sing.

Join us next week when the Republicans try to expunge the pesky 2 term limit clause from the Constitution...

I am not at all confident that the acquittal will damage Senate Republicans. Their voters are looking for excuses, not solid justifications. False equivalence serves very well. So Trump tried to dig up dirt on Biden, but maybe Biden deserved it. The Senate trial was a partisan sham, but so was the House impeachment. All politicians are shady, all politics is a game, so forget about it pick the team you would have picked before all this happened.

That's good enough for moderate Republican leaning voters. That and short attention spans.

Plus we are down to Biden and Bernie. They'll make the stench of corruption cling to Biden (regardless of facts) and Bernie's a self-proclaimed socialist. The only thing that's making me remotely hopeful is the very narrow lead the Republicans have in the Senate. 2 seats.

Welp. Looks like the entire impeachment saga has had no effect on Trump's popularity whatsoever. Opinions were already baked in. And now he will be using his All Lackey All The Time administration to seek revenge, insofar as it's possible, on anyone who has wronged him.

Yay.

It would be interesting to see what happens to Trump if everyone who works at Fox is stood up against a wall and shot; his base would have to go to sources less inclined to lie to them about him, and that seems to be very bad for Trump whenever it accidentally happens. Basically, if a Democrat gets elected the fastest way to crush Trump and the GOP forever may well be bring back the Fairness Doctrine...without a wall of lies to hide behind it's much harder to be those twits in their base.

Just in passing: it seems Trump is busy panicking about the latest viral epidemic which has already hacked over 5% off the markets in less than two days. Apparently the 40 year Republican campaign to defang the CDC and other public health agencies so they can't run down food poisoning outbreaks too quickly isn't terribly helpful now that they need to run down a different kind of outbreak very quickly; and the complete incompetence of everyone in the Administration isn't going to ameliorate that at all.

That's not in passing at all; something like a pandemic or a pandemic-induced recession is pretty much the only crisis big enough for the Trump administration not to be able to BS away. His destruction of competent government was going to come bite America in the arse sooner or later. The question was whether it would happen on Trump's watch.

As well it comes now before the election, and best it comes to a lot of the folks in his base. But with that noted, I was kind of amused that immediately after the press conference when he semi-coherently announced that he has no intention of treating this outbreak as anything but a political matter the stock market futures tanked. And today nothing but computerized buy programs that kicked in when the Dow fell below 26,000 kept it from sailing down further; and who knows how long those will hold things back.

I suppose the fact that the market has now given up all its gains since January of 2018 might bother some folks. Mostly the fat cats who own the lions share of the equities, I'm guessing. It should be amusing to watch.

Looks like the answer to how long the intervention would hold was 5 hours and 20 minutes. The Dow is about 240 points below 26,000 (down over 1,300) and there's still a few minutes to go. Looks like that press conference really did move the needle after all.

He's been able to BS his way out of several natural disasters. Puerto Rico had barely any effect on his political standing because it was already crap and the MAGA-hats didn't care about a faraway island. Hell, they don't even care about California. Floods, wildfires, hurricanes - he blatantly favoured red states over blue, and everyone just figured Trump's being Trump. Plus, last time the stock market got wobbly, he yelled at the Fed, they held interest rates down, and then it was fine. He really doesn't see why this should be any different.

Large scale disruptions to global supply chains? Enough pneumonia cases to overwhelm hospitals? Months-long interruptions to economic productivity? What's that?

Well, he's announced his administration's plan to deal with poor, helpless Covid-19:
Trump wrote:
It’s going to disappear. One day it’s like a miracle, it will disappear.

Well, I'm surprised that the Dow dropped over a thousand points in about an hour...what more could they want?

Didn't he blame the Democratic debate for it?

This will be the first major test of the power of propaganda in an otsensibly open society. Authoritarian strongmen have weathered crises like this by blaming external forces. So if I had to guess, the Trump coronavirus playbook would be to stir up xenophobia against Asians, blame Democratic mayors and governors at every opportunity, spread conspiracy theories, lie about everything, and if it gets really bad, demand constitutionally suspect emergency powers, and blast opponents as weak on disease. Those living in his microtargeted Facebook bubbles of misleading ads and slanted news might stay discombobulated enough to keep voting for him.

Nasa has released atmospheric data from China; Nitrogen Oxides in the atmosphere are down massively from the same time last year. Which means that auto transport and industrial activity are down massively from that period. This bodes, and Trump is only one of the folks who are going to take it in the teeth from that (though far and away the most deserving).

Take that with a grain of salt. The factories had shut down for the lunar new year anyway, the holiday was then extended a week, and lunar new year doesn't happen at exactly the same time every year, being on the lunar calendar. Still, it's worrying.

And Trump's utter stupidity is going to spread the damage around even more. Making other people suffer more than him is his thing. He's already gagged the scientists and called the virus a hoax, forcing Mike Pompeo to refuse to contradict him before Congress.

I haven't seen anything like good news on the virus front barring the Japanese government saying they'd drop money on stabilizing things, so I'm assuming that what we're seeing today is mostly bargain hunting. It's still an impressive gain, though if China doesn't unlock things in the next week or two then I suspect we'll be down this road again.

This morning the Fed announced a large rate cut, quite unexpectedly and quite possibly under considerable political pressure. The markets went through a classic sugar high which lasted an hour or so. Now it's down about 250 points from where it was when the cut was announced. Clearly the Fed's going to be able to handle this for Trump without him having to stop trying to steal emergency funds for his wall.

Larry Kudlow (one of Trumps official pseudoecomists) is out telling everyone to go to work if they get sick. Meanwhile Trump cancelled a trip to the CDC because he heard that someone in the building had been tested for Coronavirus. The official excuse was that they didn't want to disrupt the important work going on at CDC, but once again Trump blurted out the truth. I can't imagine why the market isn't up to 35,000 yet.
