The Trump chumps think he'll 'cut' the programs, but only for 'those' people. If it actually hits them his approval will go straight into the toilet; but until then they're dumb enough to think he's on their side.

If the Republicans were to cut entitlement programmes, which they can't because the House turned blue, but if they did, they wouldn't just hack it across the board. They'd phase in the cuts so that only future claimants get screwed, so that existing retirees can rest assured that the yoof are just lazy. As for Medicaid cuts, we've already seen state-level Republicans inflicting work requirements on seriously ill people, but only in urban areas, where people don't vote for them. In any case, we're already seeing the spectacle of farmers who got hurt by Trump's trade war continuing to support him. The collapse of essential services in Kansas under Republican leadership did not persuade people there to vote for Democrats.

Speaking of partisanship, a judge in Wisconsin ruled that their Republican legislature's post-blue wave power grab was illegal. They reacted to losing the governor's mansion by turning the governorship into basically a ceremonial position. This is blatantly against Wisconsin's constitution but the Republican-majority state supreme court will probably let them get away with it on appeal.

In Florida, the Republican legislature has knee-capped the voter's initiative to give ex-felons back the right to vote by imposing impossible hoops for them to jump through.

So much winning.

The last time the Republicans tried that (under Dubya) even the Trump Chumps out in flyover country proved to be not quite that stupid. They recognized that if they let a wedge get driven between the people paying for Social Security (the yutes/middle age types) and those benefiting from it then the beneficiaries will lose it in jig time. Unless the beneficiaries are the parasitic plutocrats, of course; the GOP is being paid to increase their handouts, not kill them.

In passing, the GOP has pretty much admitted that they can't win a majority of the vote for the presidency regardless of who is running; they're too much of a minority party. Count on Republican election fraud, abuses of power, and overt alliances with hostile foreign powers designed to game the electoral college to become a much more overt thing real soon.

Ah, remember the Bush era when the Republicans still pretended to make serious policy? And when Republican voters still had a chance of learning what said policies would actually do? Also, remember when voters claimed to care about policies and not just what football jersey their representative was wearing? Now it's all yelling on cable news and straight up lying. If not for McCain, Trump's Congress would have passed what everyone knew to be a flaming cesspit of an Obamacare repeal, and to this day, Republican voters believe McCain sabotaged their one chance at affordable health care. I think the Republican Party has learned from that experience that it's better to implement no policy of consequence except tax cuts and deregulation so that the voters don't find out they've been conned.

Just manipulate, gerrymander and disenfranchise your way to electoral victory and spend all your time yelling at liberals and minorities. Now that Mueller has punted on the issue of Trump's criminality, they'll be able to keep doing that for the foreseeable future.

Well, Trump's chosen underling has said that Mueller has punted on it. Better bet is that he found lots of evidence of crimes, but left it up to his boss whether to stick to presidential underling policy of not indicting presidents. Great surprise, his boss opted to do just that.

And it will be interesting to hear from the other Mueller report when it comes out: stating whether Trump is a Russian spy or a cretinous and completely corrupt Russian asset who can't be trusted with state secrets or foreign policy decisions. Remember, he did know Russia was interfering in the election on his behalf (per Mueller), and he very openly encouraged them to do it (we all got to watch that); it simply can't be proven that he personally assisted them in doing so. Which does very much beg the question of just what happened when Manafort handed Trump's expensive polling information to the Russians while Trump's campaign computer was in constant contact with Moscow, doesn't it? A question now to be asked in the open by Congress. Yeah, this little show's just getting started.

As for Gehenna's Own Party? That's been them since the 80s. Nothing's changed save that their base has shrunk through attrition and sacrifice. I'm idly wondering if they're going to openly start campaigning on the necessity of reelecting Trump in order to commit census fraud; they kept it to dog whistles for the last few go rounds, but things are getting dire.

In 2000, Fox News had only been around for 4 years. Their reality distortion field hadn't reached maximum power. The GOP still sold distortions (see: the Laffer Curve) but they weren't piped into everyone's grandma's living room on an hourly basis.

Also, what other Mueller report? Is he also writing a counter-intelligence report? Colour me sceptical that a counter-intelligence report is ever going to be made public. That's not how spying usually works. I imagine Congress will keep trying to dig up dirt. Feels like this poopfest will never end.

It probably won't. It's not like the Mueller report actually cleared Trump of much yet; all we have is a gloss from one of Trump's creatures saying he was specifically cleared of the charge of formally agreeing to cooperate with the Russians to steal the election. It's not like we haven't already seen folks busted for conspiracy and collusion on the 'pitch in and help the Russians' or 'know they were doing it and keep quiet' level; so one suspects strongly there's not much exoneration to be found in the real report. Probably more like 'evidence strongly suggesting, but because the suspects could flout subpoenas and not testify under oath the case wasn't strong enough to give to a jury'.

Also, it was narrowly defined as collusion specifically to influence the election. That leaves wide open all sorts of other conspiracy to drop sanctions on Russia, rewrite Ukraine policy, etc.

Barr is walking back his 'summary'; he's now saying it's not a summary, just a first gloss. Even the Trumpies are desperately trying to bury the whole incident and get their boss to shut up about exoneration; because it's very clear he wasn't, and they can't keep the report buried too much longer.

The Republicans in Congress are also popping a vein because Trump suddenly decided that now would be a great time to declare Obamacare unconstitutional because Tea Party Numpty Mick Mulvaney thinks this would be great branding among the anarcho-libertarian crowd. We also have Trump ranting about closing all the legal border crossings with Mexico and you can see his staff bending over to appease him even though they all know this is the most stupid idea since lawn darts. This is what the White House looks like now that all the conventional advisers have been replaced with butt-kissers.

But without Lawn Darts we would never have had Gravitational Dart Ninjas! This is far stupider than that.

Old Don is saying that wind turbines cause cancer (apparently unlike, say, coal power plants). What I want to know is that if he's going to be attacking windmills, who gets to be Sancho?

Jeezus, I didn't even remember that joke.

Now Trump wants Herman Cain to be on the Federal Reserve and the Senate is probably gonna roll over and give it to him. I don't even want to know how the Fox News pundits are going to spin this one.

Trump's latest greatest idea: Let's send all the illegals to sanctuary cities and see how they like it!

Trump's administration to media: We're not doing that. It would be a logistical nightmare. For starters we don't have the money for...

Trump: We're totally doing it!

Trump's administration: The idea is under consideration.

Trump: Buses go vroom vroom to sanctuary cities!

Sanctuary cities: Bring it.
