You're a constitutional monarchy that's gotten so constitutional that the power of the nominal monarch is effectively neutered (or spayed, as the case may be, seeing as how the monarch is currently female). The power of the aristocracy has likewise been effectively neutered; they can no longer oppose any action for longer than it takes for the Commons to reconfirm its vote a few times. So the British aristocracy is now safe. They are no longer able to make the Commons have kittens, and they have stopped making odious territorial markings on the British legal system, I am quite happy to consider Great Britain as within the boundaries of 'republic'. Whats unique about Britain is how far back the changes started (before the civil war, arguably even further) and gradual pace of the change (although there were periods where revolution came close, like around the time of the French Revolution.) Absolutely, to everything you just said. Quote: You a fan of Simon Sharma's History of Britain, btw? Nope. Never read it.

I direct you, S_J, to The English Civil War.
That said, I have to join you in feeling a sense of loss, for pretty much the same reasons.
edit: massively ninja'd. Although I do feel some satisfaction in having provided a link, which none of the others did.

Titles aren't being abolished, they're just becoming gradually irrelevant except as something to put on your phone bill in order to sound important.
As an irrelevant side note; everyone with a title that I've ever had to ring in my job has been excessively and unnessecarily rude (with the exception of Baroness Falkender). I wouldn't trust these people to run a country.

I already addressed the English Civil War; in fact I had it in mind when I wrote the initial post you responded to. The continuity of British government begins after the English Civil War, and not before.

Yes, I know. Hence my comment about being massively ninja'd.

Naah; the English Civil War (or that one, anyway) was outsourced to a Japanese concern.

Nononono, it means that I was pre-empted. I rolled a 1 on initiative. My reaction time was sub-par. I was beaten to the punch.

You were pre-empted by a ninja sumo wrestler named Nononono?
Sounds...heavy, dude.
