Do you ever go out of your way to do any old school pastimes that nobody seems to do any more? I haven't flown a kite since I was about 12, and it didn't even really count back then, because it was always my dad who launched them and then let me hold the string after it was safely up in the air. My parents belonged to the school of Give It Here, Ur Doing It Wrong, so a lot of our alleged "family fun time" consisted of me and my brother watching them do stuff. Ngau says he's never flown a kite at all. So today we went to the park and tried to fly a kite. I say tried, because we failed. There wasn't enough wind, and we were total n00bs besides. But it was kind of cool to be doing something fun that didn't involve looking at a screen. Neither of us have ever set off fireworks either (illegal here), so if we ever visit a jurisdiction more tolerant of recreational explosives, that's next on our list.

Does leisurely riding my bike count?

We play euchre at family gatherings a good amount - I suppose card games of that sort might count as 'old time' fun.

I haven't played Jenga since I was but a wee child... That needs to change.

If it actually snow down here, we end up running outside to play in it like kids. Throwing snowballs. Making snowmen/women. Shoving snow in each others' clothing. Snow angels.

Our city has an annual kite day out in the park by the lake, so I'll be taking my son once he's old enough. You just end up doing a lot more of the things you did as a kid when you have your own children more regularly.

We made a snowman and a snow fort in the back yard after the last snow. And this fall we flew a kite.

I played musical chairs the other day. Someone referenced it offhand, and my friend's kiddo said, "What's that?" and she looked at me in horror and said, "My children don't know what musical chairs is!" So of course we rounded up a guy with a guitar and played it right then and there. And nobody cried, which shows we were playing it with families other than my own.

A tree across the creek across the road from my house fell over and formed a bridge over the creek. As soon as I saw it, my first impulse was to climb on top of it and walk across it.

That reminds me: Does anybody else here like climbing trees? I love it! My college campus had several trees that were excellent for climbing, as well as a Eucalyptus tree that you could slide down like a fire pole. There was also a huge ficus (I think) that me and a couple friends loved to climb. We called it the "Elephant" tree. Although, last I heard, the "Elephant" tree was trimmed. I haven't seen it since.

Walnut trees make for excellent climbing thanks to many low branches that provide excellent footholds. I haven't climbed a tree in years, though, and I'm not about to anytime soon.

Indiana. It's a Midwest game, I've found. (Euchre)

Also, I suppose mushroom hunting counts as old school fun?

The other day I found a superball and my slingshot. This is exactly the type of thing I'd do when young.

I like climbing trees but I'm not good at it, having a mild fear of heights and very little upper body strength. It's basically got to have branches starting from about thigh height for me to be able to climb it, and I don't dare go higher than about ten feet.

I saw a middle aged guy swing himself up into a tree to retrieve his kite last weekend, though. I got the impression that he'd done it a lot. It wasn't a big tree and it swayed quite a lot under his weight.
