To those of you under 30 years of age and live in a 1st/2nd world country:

Halo 2 or Half Life 2?

Please disregard the myriad of Half Life 2 mods, as I see them as entirely different games which happen to run on the same engine.

And, if you want to compare multiplayer, compare Halo 2 with Deathmatch: Source, as its the closest to the original game.

And... keep it clean. I don't want a locked thread on my hands.

Edit:

Seeing as not all of you are from the FPS walk of life, I've broadened the topic for better discussion.

What is your favorite electronic game, and why?

Hmm, I'd have to go with GTA.

I haven't played Half Life 2, though I used to get freaky with the first one.

Why do games have to be compared? Why can't both be considered good games?

Because things are better than other things, and therefore anyone who uses the inferior product is inferior and gives the people who use the superior product a reason to feel better about themselves.

I haven't played HL2. As I understand what I've heard - HL2 for single, Halo 2 (which I kick arse at, btw) for multiplayer.

Speaking of which, I still need to get the new mp maps for that.

Alpha Centauri. Not only do you get to design your own units (like the Scarlet Pimpernel, named after the famous fictional character of the same name), but you also get really nice quotes and plenty of different ways to win. And mindworms... and you can build sea cities and therefore try to find the most efficient way to maximize usage of resources without overlap and without having to worry if the sea is in the wrong place.

And satellites. Don't forget the satellites.

And best of all, you've got time to think about your moves, to consider your technology choices and your opponent's motivations, to form alliances, etc. It's not all reaction speed like starcraft (which is otherwise an excellent game as well...)

It's not all Protoss carriers either.

(I hate those things)

Civilization series has always been fun.

Do you know what an EMP pulse followed by a squadron of cloaked wraiths can do to a group of Protoss carriers?

(Yes, I know about observers. But a comsat scan, remember the wraiths, goodbye observer. And arbiter, so the carriers can be seen... now if only I could reliably have science vessels and wraiths before other people have carriers, I might have a hope...)

Incedentally, contrary to popular opinion, hallucinations can kill. Admittedly, their targets are pretty much limited to scourges and infested terrans, but nonetheless...

I also found out once that hallucinatory observers are visible without needing detectors. That was a bit of a shock.

And, of course, the best way to defeat the Protoss is to take out their enough of their pylons, followed by all their probes. No mineral gathering, no more probes can be built, no more pylons can be built... then the only tricky bit is destroying all their nexi before killing off enough units to let them build another probe. (Actually, that strategy - with suitable alterations - works against just about everyone...) Guardians and/or siege tanks are very useful here (but never let them attack without support in the form of mutalisks/goliaths, or their air units will just wipe out that attack).

I find that the winning Protoss strategy is to get the Citadel of Adun, upgrade the zealots. Then build lots zealots, and some dragoons for air support, but I hate dragoons. Then attack attack attack. Works like a charm. I love zealots. "My life for Aiur!"

.....

This turned out interesting.

Okay then, new discussion. What's your favorite game of all time from now until infinity?
