I'm guessing Pete has his eye on this storm, as do I, living in NJ as we do... a potential major impact zone with this monster storm.
My preparations are under way, as I advise anyone else who lives on the East Coast from NC to Mass to do as well. It'll be the strongest storm since the Great Atlantic Hurricane of 1944, which did tremendous damage even to the sparsely populated state at that time. With all the people crowded down by the shore now, this could be very bad. Even though I anticipate mandatory evacuations for the barrier islands, if it gets very close to the coast (as is still quite possible, about a 50/50 chance at this point) even 30-50 miles inland will have hurricane force winds and flooding rain, depending on exactly how close it is.
If the eyewall brushes the coast... well, we're boned.
