Hello. I used to read Sluggy every day, pretty much until Kitten II. After that I forgot about it, but in the past 2 days have read everything that I've missed. I really have no life. Uh...my only forum experience is at homestarrules.com. I'll try to follow the guidelines here and be a respectful citizen of the country of the Sluggites.

Thanks, and welcome. Following the rules is all we can really ask of our posters here. Well, that, and their customary introductory haiku.

I like your handle... but is that Glorfindel of Gondolin, or Glorfindel who aided the hobbits and Strider on the road to Rivendell?

Hmmm. Perhaps a bit of background is in order?

In the book version of The Fellowship of the Ring, it was not Arwen who came upon Strider and the Hobbits, but rather an elf named Glorfindel, one of the Noldor of Elrond's house in Rivendell. He bids Frodo ride his horse (alone, mind you, for speed) in a race to cross the Ford of Bruinen into safety at Rivendell. When Frodo is across, but not out of danger and facing all nine of the Black Riders, in his half-twilight vision he perceives Glorfindel as a shining figure of light who helps drive the Nazgul into the river and defeat.

A different Glorfindel appears in The Silmarillion, being one of the captains in the hidden elven city of Gondolin. He dies in defense of that city, when Morgoth's forces finally locate and assail it. It's been a while since I read that book, so I don't remember too much more about it.

So... which of them is the source of your name? Or did you snag it from elsewhere? :torg:

From what I remember (which isn't much, I need a reread), he fought a Balrog there, and it was important for Earendil's successful escape from Gondolin. Or something like that.

All Tolkien elves (whether Eldar or Avari ;) are fuctionally immortal, though they can be "killed", which sends their spirits to the Halls of Mandos in the far West. Once there, I don't believe they can leave.

The Glorfindel who fought a Balrog at Gondolin (thank you, fthg42) was killed thusly. I chalk it up to JRRT being human and reusing a good name. (though I believe that's the only elven name that's used more than once)
