In honor of today's rare shoutout to the author, here's a query for all you obsessed Sluggites.

How many times has Sluggy Freelance broken the 4th wall? Cites, please.

How many times? Not sure how we would easily do that. So I'll do something easier.

THE VERY FIRST COMIC has Torg talking directly to the audience.

Ah, but that's merely leaning on the fourth wall. (TVTropes link; do not click) To break the fourth wall, the characters must be explicitly addressing the audience.

Picky, picky... Okay then, how about this one?

Torg talking to a wall.

Pete doesn't actually break the fourth wall with the latest comic. It's more of an Author Allusion. No link because there isn't actually a trope by that name.

As for Kitoba's question Pete breaks the fourth wall somewhat frequently in the early years but it of course became rarer over time. The more egregious breaks were relegated to filler, but we can't forget The "stare at the audience" beat panels either. They're probably the most common canon breaks but those might just be leaning as well.

In other words, more than a handful and probably too many to easily count given the size of the archive.

edit:
I can't guarantee this is an exhaustive list, in fact it more than likely isn't, but here's a NiftySearch for "fourth wall"

Wasn't that a guest comic? It was one of my favorites, but I don't think it was canon. In fact, if I remember, it was a Sluggite fan comic... maybe even by inspiration?

kitoba is right: that particular comic was filler by someone other than Pete. (It wasn't inspiration though. The artist was Oliver Zuchowski)

The last comic I recall directly breaking the 4th wall - although I'm sure this trick was used again - is during the Holiday Wars when the minions were talking about the Deus Ex egg: http://www.sluggy.com/comics/archives/daily/20031214

They describe how the egg is like a deus ex machina, and one of them is like "A lame end to a story?" And then they all specifically look at the camera.

Ah yes, inspiration's entry was the contest winner, while that one was third place. Very clever, she actually hides her own forum name in the comic's description... Appropriate, given what inspired this discussion.

I... never knew Insipiration wrote that comic. Huh.
