Right, or, to give another analogy, someone unused to emojis (me) is sent a message with 3 crying faces. Ok, I know those mean "sad" but what are you trying to tell me? We know an anima is sad, but what is it sad about? And beyond the cultural subtext, as you said, is evolutionary.
