Well, who knows. Bun bun was MIA for several years outside of time. Zoe was a vegetable. Sam a pile of dust. Many others killed. Pete could do pretty much anything and not shock me. ONLY MAKE ME CRY.

If Riff dies, it should be as he lived - brooding and surrounded by explosions.
May Pete's mercy be upon him! (I'm hoping today's strip will save him!!! I still remember my intense distress when Zoe died!!!)

I was thinking that the only thing that can save him is missles that don't work. C'mon, stolen-riff-design missiles! Be full of peanut butter!

On the one hand, I definitely don't want Riff to die. On the other, I don't want the status quo to continue. If Schlock escapes (he did) and Riff lives, we're in for God (and not even Pete) only knows how many more years before proper resolution. If Riff dies, the comic must move on to resolution somewhat quickly, because you can't have buddy comedy without the buddy.

Schlock's not going to give the AI (or anybody) a better network than he has. So, with the router down, how is the AI able to launch the missiles? Possible explanation 1: The timer expired while the router was down, and the AI enqueued a "fire" command for the Dire-REA. A little later the router came back up, so the queued message could be sent, and missiles were launched. This is possible unless we see the router still being down after this. Possible explanation 2: The AI is distributed across several computers on the station and in various vehicles. When communication is down each node continues running independently. The node in the Dire-REA didn't receive the second passphrase, so it followed its programming and launched missiles.
