I believe Chaz was activated when he came through the portal (see the color panels when he was brought in).

On the other hand, Chaz told Lady Gwynn that she would not be able to heal Fred -- which seems an odd remark about a stab wound, considering her abilities.

Yes, he was, and I asked earlier where on earth Satan got ahold of some innocent blood in the Never just before he stepped through K'z'k's portal.

But Chaz's activations don't last very long, and unless Pete intentionally didn't show it in the previous strip, Chaz was not activated immediately before Farahn killed Kron. Which would suggest Kron activated Chaz with his own innocent blood.

Going even further, in the strip where Kron was killed, http://archives.sluggy.com/book.php?cha ... 2014-03-14, only the part of Chaz emerging from Kron's chest is activated; only in the next strip do we see Chaz fully activated (still in black and white, but distinctly different from how he looks unactivated, such as in the strip before when Kron dies).

So really it's very clear that Kron both activated Chaz and was killed by him in one stroke, and his "can't heal" remark implies that a conventional weapon shouldn't have been able to kill him, being a demigod and all.

It seems that the rule is that you can survive a brief activation cut from Chaz, but a more serious wound will kill you. It probably takes a moment for him to fully power up, since we saw him only partly powered when Kron died.

Hm. You have a point. I wonder if that was intentional, or if Pete just missed coloring the base of Chaz's blade.

I'm pretty sure that's just Pete's depiction of the "activatedness" flowing from where the blood touched. The blade went in point-first, so that part lights up shortly before the rest.

The difference is Kron, and anyone else innocent you'd stab with Chaz, has their soul/existence contained within their body. The Sashas do not, so you don't get to kill two birds with one stone in that sense.

The shadow demon lady had her "soul" (possessor) outside her body -- at least as it was depicted -- but that died too.
