Arkady signals one of the pages, asks for a couple of pieces of paper, then sends the following note to Preceptor Vanire:

Arkady wrote:
Your Grace: I am thinking it would be a shameful neglect of our duty to educate future generations if the 'scurrilous and cowardly attack' is not read into the record. How else would they know what not to believe? Arkady.

"Regardless of the opinions of some of the members of this body," insists Makova, "it is well within the remit of this group to condemn this pack of lies as the worthless besmirching of an innocent and noble Primate that it is. I call for a vote to issue a strong statement condemning these accusations! All in favour, please raise your right hand."

"Substance," says Dolmant, standing for that one word. Makova gives him a death glare; before long the votes are being tallied.

It's at this point that Arkady's note reaches Vanire. He takes one glance at at and visibly holds back the urge to laugh.

"Sixty-seven in favour," announces the young clerk whose job description clearly includes counting the votes. "Sixty-two against; thirty-nine not present. The margin of victory is insufficient to pass on a matter of substance."

Vanire stands up. "Patriarch Makova, the contents of these posters may not be known to all Patriarchs present in the room, and they will certainly not be known to any future scholars who may be studying this meeting. I therefore propose that these accusations be properly read into the record before any more votes are taken on them."

Anyone watching Raven will notice him quickly pen a note and send it to Makova.

"Ridiculous!" insists Makova. "These accusations are such clear lies that no such vote can possibly succeed!"

"Nevertheless," insists Vanire.

A vote is promptly taken; sixty votes in favour of the accusations being read into the record, sixty-nine against. The motion is defeated. Makova reads Raven's note during this vote.

"We shall put the matter aside for the moment," says Makova, with bad grace, "and move on to the immediate matter of the lighting within these chambers."

Sam leaned forwarded and quickly scribbled a note out for Vanire:

Quote:
The Terrans would be willing to contribute lights that could outshine any candle and properly illuminate these halls for years to come so this never has to be a topic ever glob.

While Makova launches into a long speech on the importance of proper lighting, Vanire sends a note back to Sam...

Quote:
LITES FINE. MAKOVA STALLIN. NO CLEW WHY.

Arkady sends along a note to Dolmant:
Arkady wrote:
Your Grace: I seem to recall the subject of the Arch-Prelacy was already raised, and a nomination submitted, before the topic turned to how many candles would it take to stifle Patriarch Makova. Perhaps it should be returned to? Or the subject of martial law interfering with passage on the streets by Patriarchs should be touched on?

Yeah, but he can't stall on the lights if they're more permanently fixed. He's stalling for something, take that time back from him

Both notes get replies. Dolmant sends one to Arkady:

Quote:
Unfortunately, Makova is the Speaker; he gets to choose which order we tackle topics in. He was right, my nomination was out of order; the question of the nominations must be on the agenda and may not be ignored, but it may be delayed for as long as Makova is willing to discuss other matters.

I just wish I knew what he was waiting for.

And Vanire sends one to Sam:

Quote:
HOW KWIK U INSTAL??

After a bit of thought, Arkady sends a note back to Dolmant:
Arkady wrote:
Would it help speed things up if the Terrans, as part of our tithe, agreed to put in better lights around here? It would only take a day or so to put them up once we get a chance to get back to our colony.

Dolmant sends a reply.

Quote:
The lights are a trivial thing. Everyone knows that, including Makova. If the lights are fixed, he'll almost certainly find some other trivial thing to concern him.

I wonder if he might be stalling until those last Patriarchs take Raven's bribe.

Arkady sends a note back to Dolmant:
Arkady wrote:
If Makova can be ignored, then perhaps while he is making noise you should introduce Preceptor Vanire to the 11 still for sale. Now is as good a time as any for him to tell them about his day at court, I am thinking. Nothing else important is going on, and it may raise their price.

This time, Dolmant does not reply. Instead, after a moment, he can be seen talking with Vanire; and then the two of them head off together to go and talk quietly with some of the other Patriarchs.

It seems likely that he agreed that Arkady had a good idea.

Makova glares at the two of them and the volume of his speech about lighting rises, presumably in proportion to his irritation at them.

Felix keeps a close eye on the Patriarchs that Dolmant and Vanire go to talk to, keeping track of them and attempting to figure out who is who.

He sends Theresa to fetch some paper and writing utensils.

"Keep an eye on all the people Vanire and Dolmant talk to. We can send them missives and try to sway them to our side after they've had a good talking to. Does anyone have any ideas on what we could try to lure them out with?"

Arkady is going to keep an eye on the Primate and his friends. Just for yucks he's going to see what he makes of them (scanners on).

The Primate's desks don't come with names, but after a while Felix is pretty sure he can recognise the eleven not-quite-bribed-yet Patriarchs. Arkady, meanwhile, takes a good look around the room. There seems to be no shortage of time...

Arkady: Empathy: +5 Roll: +2
Raven: Resolve: +5 Roll: +0

It's hard to read a man who can stonewall like Raven. Most people wouldn't pick up a thing from him, not even on their very best day.

Fortunately, Arkady is not most people. The mere fact that Raven is here says something - and the intensity with which he studies the debate floor suggests something further.

Raven was never interested in political power or wealth; Arkady suspected so earlier, but now he sees it confirmed. But the vote being currently delayed on the Basilica floor - ah, now that is something that Raven is interested in. It might not even be the end of his plan so far - but the entire reason why he took control of all the wealth he has was in order to influence this vote.

Raven will pull out every stop he can in order to win here.

--------------

Meanwhile, back at Dolmant's house, Nathan gets called to the front door by one of the servants. Apparently, someone has arrived to meet him.

Felix jots down some text, practicing writing with the archaic implements while simultaneously planning out what it is he wants to say. It doesn't seem like a good idea to outright say the word bribe, so Felix approaches the task from an angle.

He opens the floor to ideas on how, best, to write the letter so as to convince the wayward Patriarchs to come over to Ortzel's side.
