Felix immediately charges to the truck from the wall and retrieves a scoped rifle. Returning to the wall, he draws a bead on the Seeker and takes aim.

"Nathan, get up here! Two headshots are better than one!"

Arkady readies his friend the sergeant and looks down the low power scope at the scene. Does he see the priestly type fellow? Either way, he takes the aimed aspect.

Between his visor, his scope, and the aid of his sidekick, Felix can't miss - wait - the Seeker is passing behind a soldier - ah! There! A clear shot!

Felix: Guns: +2 Visor: +4 Sidekick: +4 Roll: +1 Total: +11
Seeker: Hardened Carapace: Immune to bullets

The Seeker rocks slightly on its saddle, then turns to look directly at Felix. The greenish glow from under the hood seems to hide all of the Seeker's features.

Arkady sees three horsemen (well, horsebeings, the Seeker's not exactly human), riding together. One is the Seeker. The second, from his clothing and the way he's yelling at the soldiers, is probably the Count Groan. And the third is some fairly innocuous-looking clerk-like type of fellow. Neither of the humans are currently wearing a brown cloak, and neither of them look particularly priestly; but Arkady doesn't have a good description of the Zemoch priest, so perhaps one of those guys is him?

Spend a FATE point to make a declaration. Nate is armed with an anti-material rifle chambered for .50 BMG, and is using armour-piercing incendiary ammunition. (For those craving details, the rifle is a Barrett model 99, with the 32 inch barrel. M8 API ammunition will generally penetrate 16mm of hardened steel armour at 500 meters. Nate was planning to use it on the ballistae on the ships to help persuade Count Groan to grant them safe passage.)

Nate's voice crackles over the radio.

"I'm on top of the Keep. I see it."

He watches as Felix's bullet spatters off the thing's carapace, and turns to look at the source of fire. "It has good armour" he mutters under his breath. Still, all armour has it's weak spots, and as the Seeker moves, Nate takes a guess at where it's carapace is weak and leaves gaps in order for it to move. That, combined with the firepower of the rifle and ammunition he's using should be enough to punch through. Hopefully. Magic is weird.

He settles the crosshairs of his scope onto the most likely spot for a gap in the Seeker's carapace, draws in a long even breath, waits for just the right moment, between heartbeats, and squeezes the trigger.

Felix will donate his visor to Nate to improve his odds. Felix and Theresa also get out a couple pairs of binoculars and serve as Nate's spotters to give him proper range, wind speed, all that jazz.

Once the shot has been taken, Felix will use his binoculars to inspect Groan, his subordinate, and the soldiers to see if they have any insect bites.

Just this once, Nate can pull out armour-piercing incendiary rounds without spending a FATE point on it.

Nathan carefully studies his target:

Nathan: Alertness: +4 Roll: +1 Total: +5 Target: +4

With careful observation, Nathan is pretty sure that the Seeker has a joint in the carapace in the vicinity of its neck - or, at least, it can bend at the neck.

Nathan: Guns: +5 Visor: +4 Spotters: +2 Roll: +3 Total: +14

Nathan's shot is pinpoint accurate; he could have hit a five cent piece had he fired at one.

The bullet travels from Nate's gun, far faster than the speed of sound - and the Seeker raises a single sleeved arm (it started moving a moment before Nate shot, as if it knew what was coming), as if to try to catch the bullet. The sleeve slips back slightly, revealing something that's definitely not a hand...

...and Nate's bullet just stops in mid-air, a good five metres away from the Seeker.

The Seeker unclenches its claw, and the bullet simply drops harmlessly to the ground. The creature's shoulders are shaking. Is it... laughing at you?

Felix: Alertness: +2 Roll: +1 Specifically searching for signs of Seeker influence: +1 Total: +4

Felix sees no sign of a bite on the Count or his clerk. The soldiers, however, are a different story. Several of them have visible welts, and all of them have the blank-eyed stare of the Seeker's victims.

"Heads up! The soldiers are Seeker puppets! Piper, can you counter spell at this distance?"

Felix gets out the grenade launcher and preps it for use.

"I don't think we can capture and restrain this many people. We might have a slaughter on our hands after all. Any objection to me firing Big Bertha into the crowd?"

Nate makes a rude gesture toward the Seeker. Some days you're the puppy....

"There's not much we can do to help them at this point anyway even if we could capture them. I say take the shot if you think you can take out the Bug."

Felix aims the grenade launcher at the Seeker and waits for an opportunity to shoot that won't hit Groan or the other person.

Fate Point Expenditure! The Seeker travels just far enough away from Groan and friend that Felix is comfortable taking the shot.

Roger goes inside to keep an eye on things. If the seeker is around, it's probably a good idea to keep an eye on the rear flank. If anyone asks, he's "inspecting the defenses."

FATE point expended

The Seeker is pushed slightly away from Count Groan by the soldiers. Felix takes aim and - wait, no - the Seeker moves up right next to the Count. Felix keeps a close eye on the Seeker, as the Seeker is again pushed away by the crowd - but no, once again, at the last moment, the Seeker moves, this time to directly behind the Count.

Felix has discovered another of the Seeker's defensive abilities; Foreknowledge: the Seeker always knows when taking some action will get it killed or injured, and can avoid taking that action, in advance. That is to say, the Seeker doesn't just know what will happen - it can tell what will happen if it takes or does not take a certain action, before it chooses whether or not to take that action.

"I can't counter the Seeker's magical defenses at all," says Piper. "It's the current champion of Azash, and the instinct to remain alive and avoid damage is one of the most powerful of all - the two of those together are too much for me to overcome, at any distance."

Arkady shrugs. "Use a flash-bang, Felix. You won't be threatening it's life, and it can't stay and avoid 'harm'." He then heads down to explain to Sir Ulath, the lord of the castle and his brother that the seeker, and a possible priest of Azash, are with Count Groan; and a number of the count's men are currently victims of the seeker.

He then faces the patriarch directly. "A champion of Azash is out there specifically to keep you from the free city. Do you have any ideas how to counter it?"

"Alive and unharmed? Well then let's honor it's wishes."

Felix launches a stun grenade at the Seeker in an attempt to pin it down unharmed.

Felix fires his flashbang, and the Seeker does nothing to stop, slow, or avoid it, apparently taken entirely by surprise. It goes off with a loud bang and a bright flash, and the Seeker screams, a thin, high-pitched noise that issues from no human throat.

Every single one of Count Groan's crossbowmen immediately targets Felix, who has to duck below the battlements very quickly to avoid the incoming bolts.

It seems that the Seeker's foreknowledge only affects things that might kill or injure it.

--------------

"The Knights of the True Church are its strong right arm, and more powerful in honorable combat than the champions of Evil," proclaims Ortzel, who has not yet looked over the wall. "Should Sir Ulath here challenge the opposing knight to single combat, we will no doubt be swiftly victorious."

"The Seeker's not a knight," points out Sir Ulath, "and I doubt it would accept single combat. Did you say it got the entire army? If so, we're in trouble."

"Trouble, how?" asks Baron Alstrom. "My walls will hold strong against any attacker for years at the least."

"Not this attacker," says Sir Ulath, grimly. "Normally, when a force tries to take the walls, you fire off your defenses until they break and run, right? Which will be as soon as you've done enough damage to the attacking force."

"Yes?" says the Baron, wondering where this is going.

"These soldiers will never break and run," claims Sir Ulath, drawing on his experience fighting Seeker-bitten peasants. "They'll spend a hundred, a thousand lives just to get one man onto the walls. And in the face of that, not even your walls can survive their first attack."
