Downtown Chicago
Day One of The Great Cataclysm

The delivery van shot out of the westward parking access like an high-capacity bat out of a particularly mundane hell, and into the early-morning sky. By the dashboard readout it is almost nine o'clock, though that can't be right, unless everyone lost some time this morning, and the sun should be up.

If it is, it hasn't diegned to show it's face. The sky is an angry colour, like a bruise that hasn't finished blooming, and the heavy clouds are reflecting the fires from the city, as well as the wierd blue lights from those massive ribbons of energy that have scythed their way through buildings, and all other manmade impediments.

Those ribbons keep drawing the eye. Most appear to be on the order of ten storeys tall, and have cut right through any buildings in their path. All the ones in sight are running in straight lines, and while some of the smaller ones are only going for a mile or so before terminating abruptly, some of the taller, wider ones (such as the forty-story monstrosity that appears to have sliced 'Scraper Four in half, causing it to fall to either side like a lightning-struck tree, destroying a few city blocks as it came down) go right out of the city, without end, for all the occupants of Triss's van can tell.

The worst part, though, is the... portal. Over by Tinley Creek Park, two of the larger ribbons cross, and at the intersection they've turned into something awful. A huge tear-shaped... rip, framed by the nauseating shifting blue light, which flares into the sky like something from a bad movie, which shows, clear as day some strange alien landscape. As everyone watches, the whole thing flashes as bright as an atomic detonation, and the scene through the portal changes.

In his seat, Angelo doubles over in pain.

In the driver's seat, Triss's attention is ripped away from the scenery as the van lurches from an impact. There's something on the roof.

"AAAAAGHHHU!"

Angelo grabs his head once more, his surroundings once more rendered less important than the pain he feels.

"Hold 'er steady Triss!"

Bill takes off his seat belt, and opens the side door. He takes a firm grip on one of the grab bars, before leaning out and poking the muzzle of his gun and one eye over the edge of the roof.

"I think we hit something..." Lita sighs as she continues to stare out at the scenery.

Triss says nothing, but locks her eyes back on the air around her and tries to keep the van from lurching and throwing Bill to a grisly doom.

Bill forces the door open, and an alarm on the van's display immediately goes off, shreiking and (absolutely unnecessarily) informing everyone that the door has just been opened in mid-air. You'd think they just would have made it a feature that you can't do that...

Bill grabs one of the interior handles mounted above the doorframe, and is able to lean out far enough to see the roof. There is definitely something up there. A large, ugly something with massive wings and talons. The rest of the features are kind of lost as the wings, and talons elbow everything else on Bill's mind out of the way and demand his focus.

Opening his eyes just enough to let a little light in, Angelo stares up at the roof. Before, he'd almost been able to . . . pop his mind back into place. A place where everything was connected and the pain was gone. If he could only just . . .

Bill slams the but of the burp gun onto the roof of the van to stabilize it, points it more or less at the creature, and mashes down on the trigger, until either the critter is gone,or the clip is dry.

"Goddammit, would you stop playing around outside so I can shake this thing off?!" Triss yells towards the howling door.

"I'm bored, is there anything interesting going on?" Lita asks, staring out the window of the vehicle while awaiting something to happen.

Bill somehow ignored the giant talons that he was specifically mentioned being fixated on, and tries to fire his gun through the carbotanium roof of the van (in the future, even crappy flying Ford Transits are carbotanium to keep the weight down). He fails, because that's what happens in this world when the narration says something specific and you ignore it. The bullets don't cut anyone else in half because the world isn't that cruel, yet.

Lita has to be the dumbest or most oblivious person alive, because Bill is shooting a machine gun inches from her at a huge flying monster on the roof of the flying truck she is riding in, while the door is open. So essentially all of that is very interesting on a scale of "not at all" to "threatening your life."

Angelo's headache, well it has reached new heights. Or depths. Read your PM's, Dom.

Triss continues to be the only person with both a survival instinct and a lack of a death wish.

Triss hits the override to close the door. Bill better pick a side, quick.

Bill leans back into the van swearing sulfurously and slides back into his seat, before reloading his gun.

"Hey," interjects Wolfgang, "I have both of those!" He then attempts to find some sort of emergency parachute device.

Angelo draws his hands in, towards him. The air in the van seems to ripple, sucking in towards Angelo in the front seat, until with a shriek, Angelo thrusts his hands upwards. All of his pain, all of his confusion, all of his hatred blasts upwards towards their attacker and with it goes his force of will.

The roof of the van buckles, the metal screeching in stress, dimples out briefly before it punches open driving a ring of metal into the taloned creature along with the force of Angelo's rage. The air whistles through the doubled-fist sized hole in the roof as Angelo sinks back into his chair, the headache gone.
