Cat Alley contains a large crowd of mice having a party; no sign of any cats, and, if you believe the rumours going round, any that turn up will get dragged off.

But where to? How do a mouse and a rat track down the cats of Cat Alley?

"Okay!" Avery goes over to where Hex is juggling. "Do you know where the little girl who lost her cat is?"

"Sorry, Miss Avery," Hex replies. "I'd never seen the girl before. She was at the police station, but they just sent her home to wait for the cat."
Hex juggles a pair of balls nervously while he thinks. "The locals here mentioned that a cat showed up here while they were setting up the party, but it got hauled away like all the other ones. I can't say why, but I had a hunch that last cat might be the one that walked away from the little girl, but I haven't been able to get any more information about it yet. From the sounds of it any cat that shows up here gets hauled away somehow, but the locals run away without seeing it happen."
"I suppose one option would be to go find some alley cat nearby and lure it here to see what happens to it," He muses, perking up at the idea of seeing a cat in distress.

"That sounds awfully dangerous. For us, and for the neighborhood, and for the cat." Avery thinks. "Maybe we could hire a cat to be bait? But where would we find one?" Avery thinks some more, looking distressed and annoyed. "I suppose Fat Cat might know a tom in need of cash, with nothing to lose. Not his own gang, he's not one to stick his neck out, but maybe some stray trying to impress him? Fat Cat might know about these disappearances, come to think of it."

She grins nervously at Hex. "Do you feel like leading the way over to Fat Cat's Casino? I know a mangy cat, name of Mepps, who can maybe get us an audience with the boss. Or at least be tricked into telling us if he knows what's going on. He's not the sharpest cheddar in the cheesemonger's shop. Does that sound like a good plan? I wish I still had the car. I'm really really not dressed for this. And I wish I had that crisp in the backseat. You're a really talented juggler, by the way."

OOG: If Hex agrees, and if CCC is okay, I'm spending a Fate point to declare that there's a nearby busline that will get us to the Casino fairly quickly.

"Excuse me? Did you say hire a cat? You don't think you could actually trust one of those mangy felines, do you?" Hex asks incredulously.

"Are you really sure you want to go there, Miss Avery?" Hex asks. "I used to help my 'uncle' Max, when he performed there, so I know the place, but it's definitely not the sort of place I'd let anyone go alone. I just hope Fat Cat doesn't remember me, not yet anyway."

"I don't know about trust," Avery muses, "but I thought you could always hire anyone to do anything if you paid them enough."

"Oh, Fat Cat's all right if you keep your head down, don't make trouble, and compliment whatever hideous piece of pseudo-art he's got in his gallery that week. But if you're worried ... maybe that's not such a good plan." Avery looks relieved. "Okay. You decide our next move. I'll help with whatever you want."

"Fat Cat, not so bad?" Hex repeats, stunned. Then shaking himself, "First, let's take a look at one of the local cat's homes while we're here. The local mice said there was a clanking and a bunch of screeching and yowling, so I'd imagine there was some sort of fight involved, if we can find the scene of one of those, we might find some clue as to who/what abducted them. If that doesn't work, we can try the casino."

Investigation:

Hex: Skill: 0 Roll: 1 Total: +1
Avery: Skill: 0 Roll: 0 Total: 0

It's easy enough to find evidence of a fight; the cardboard box that this cat was living in is a mess, one side torn open.

But it's Hex who spots the claw marks in a nearby wooden plank. They're too deep to have been left by a housecat. A lion, maybe, or a bear...

There is also one thing notably missing from the scene, and that's blood. Wherever the cats went, they went in one piece.

Hex regards the claw marks apprehensively, "... as if cat's weren't bad enough."

"No blood, so, they're probably still alive somewhere," He says sadly. "Great, so we got some lion collecting house cats. I suppose it's too much to ask for him to be filling his refrigerator...
I hate to say it, but it looks like we may as well try the casino."

"As you say!" Avery scampers to the bus stop.

Hex stops fiddling with a small knick-knack that he'd picked up in the cat's home and watches Avery scamper off. Absently pocketing the item, he hurries after her, mumbling to himself.

The bus ride is uneventful, as is the scamper up through the Happy Tom catfood factory (the casino being hidden in the large statue of a cat on the roof).

The casino itself, however, is damaged. Something smashed down the front door, which is hanging off its hinges; standing in front of the open doorway are a mole, a rat, and a lizard, all armed with sharp pointy sticks that they're holding pointed outwards like spears.

Avery will recognise the mole (Mole) and the rat (Snout), but the lizard is a stranger.

Behind them, an empty casino is visible, tables overturned, playing cards scattered. The smashed door has some familiar claw-marks on it. But the doorway just doesn't seem big enough for a bear or a lion. A bulldog or maybe even a small rottweiler might just fit, but nothing much bigger...

There isn't a crowd for Hex to skulk in, though he can hide behind the air vent if he wants.

"Whoa," Hex exclaims, surprised. He steps up toward the three, but stops at a reasonable* distance, "What happened here?"

*close enough to be heard, but far enough to give him a chance to run if they become aggressive.

"Oh, no!" Avery looks around the casino in horror. "Are you all right? Hello, I'm Avery," she says to the lizard. "Snout, are you okay? Mole, sweetie, are you hurt?"
