This is probably somewhere, but why don't we have them?

Because they're boring and repetitive, and it has Always Been That Way. There was a great big explanation, but that about sums it up.
Meh, just use your location like everybody else.

Yeah, but that has a much lower word count. Locations are repetitive, too. We still have them. Tradition only means so much to me.

but the locations are off to the side. Wheras signitures break up the flow of the conversation.

If that wasn't good enough...
Thyla wrote: Signatures will never be added. It is simply not necessary. Two common appeals:
1. I'd like to sign my name to my posts!
We know who's posting - your avatar, forum name, and location are displayed with every post, and you can also optionally display contact information in every post.
2. I'd like to include a witty tagline.
No thanks. We'd rather be convinced of your wit through your posts, not your sig.
3. I'll pay you $1000 to enable signatures.
Done deal! :-D Caesar Salad wrote: Basically because signatures increase the "noise" level of the forums. They're nothing but the same thing, over and over again, and they generally add nothing to the post. We already have your name, we already have your avatar...we don't need signatures.
That being said, we cannot and won't stop you from manually adding signatures on to each of your posts. Be creative!

Now those are fairly valid reasons. Though I will say that on the forums I've been on that have signatures, as long as the signatures aren't massive beasts, they don't really break up the flow.
And most people don't use them for "witty" stuff. Just random things that they like.

i'll tell ya, i got so used to the nice clean non-signature format of sluggy that i actually can't read boards with sigs anymore. When i was pregnant i hung out on some baby boards and everyone would have massive cutesy pics of their kids that took up half the page. and on a gaming board everyone would have pretty versions of their mains that took up half the page. my scrolling finger just got tired.
heh.
anyway, the question has been answered, and just consider it part of our unique charm. plus you can always paste in your clever quote or whatnot at the end of your posts (see Dodger77 and others)

I only do it occasionally because I think I'd get fed up with it if I did it everytime (and I almost certainly wouldn't be the only one.) Plus, I get to do it when I think it's appropriate, and not worry about it when I feel it wouldn't be appropriate. Best of both worlds, in my opinion.

Those would be examples of "massive beasts". But I get the point as to why people don't want them here.
