Are <bleep>ing ugly. Like, extremely so. Like all Web 2.0 things, it's all bling and no rest.

So, are there plans to get a skin to put it back like it was, visually? If not, what are the other advantages we get from the new version that justify having to get used to this ugly new theme?

Yes, I'm working on it.

The old skins don't work with the new version of the software.

I added the "classic" PHPBB skin back in as an option, if you go into your preferences.

And please don't get confused - web 2.0 is about simplicity. It's not Web 2.0's fault that places like myspace and facebook have corrupted it to the point of it being all bling and no substance.

That does make things a bit better, thanks.

As for "simplicity": I have yet to see the Web 2.0 site that became "simpler". "Simplicity" seems to mean "confuse the heck out of users and move things from where they used to be." "Simple" would be "leaving things alone"; I can appreciate the security upgrades (I'm in the industry), but I do get tired of security fixes always having to come with interface "upgrades" that rarely are.

Office 2007 and Vista are prime examples of Web 2.0 design.

Actually, they're prime examples of the same perception you have: They confused 'pretty' for usable.

OS X is extraordinarily pretty, easy on the eyes, etc. But it also has great human interface guidelines which make that pretty work well.

Microsoft seems to have confused the success Apple has had with OS X with the fact that it's pretty - rather than it being amazingly easy to use because things make sense.

Office 2007 is abysmal, because it's not obvious where anything is or how to use it. And Vista is an obnoxious failure that will go down in history as the biggest and hopefully last major mistake of Microsoft's dominance.

Web 2.0 is supposed to be about simplifying the user interface, and making things easier for users and getting good collaboration ,etc. Unfortunately, so many companies have taken the Microsoft approach to it (if we add big shiny buttons our users will love our site! as opposed to If we simplify our interface it will be easier to find things...) that people come off with the same impression you have.

I am working currently with Pete on rebuilding Sluggy from the ground up - it is entirely my intention to make it MORE usable, and for what it's worth we will go through a beta with copious user feedback before we run off and replace the existing system. If I have my way, the changes will be 95% behind the scenes, with the visible changes to users being subtle. Little things like a more usable calendar, and better defenders functionality.

That said, functionality wise what do you want from the updated forums when I take a crack at the style/design?
